White Bolognese

So there is a book that I like. It is like a cookbook with a romance novel thrown in. It is called Cooking for Mr. Latte by Amanda Hesser. It details how Amanda Hesser met and dated and married Mr. Latte. It is a charming book. There was a recipe in it for a white bolognese sauce with rigatoni. It is basically how I make a meat sauce, but instead of putting tomato sauce in it, you put heavy cream and beef broth. It is really tasty.

Keema Alu

I read a lot of foodie magazines and read a lot of foodie blogs. But sometimes, I get a recipe idea from all places: A COOKBOOK

I am always looking for another ground beef recipe. So today I tried Keema Alu.

It is mentioned to be Indian in origin and it is ground beef with potatoes. I made it with raita, pita bread and rice. So it completed the multiple starch in one meal thing for me.

When it is this hot, I really do not like cooking. It seems counter productive to make dinner when you are spending a fortune cooling your house to livability. But I do like to look at recipes. This one interests me because it would be a combination of Beef and Chocolate. But I think I will not make it when it is 80 degrees at midnight.

Red Meat

Sometimes, all I want is red meat. So I got a large rib eye for the three of us to share. That is 1 and 1/3 pounds of meat. Yohboh does all the grilling but here are a few tips that Minjenah has observed:
1) Let the meat come to room temperature so that the meat cooks evenly.
2) Use salt and pepper on good steak. Good steak needs little else.
3) Rest the meat before slicing.

The way you cook

When you cook, do you have a plan when you go to the grocery store? Or do you look in the fridge to get inspired?

I wish I was the former, but I am more of the latter. Today, we had chicken parmesan. I actually marinated the chicken in leftover pickle juice (?!!?). Marinated chicken in pickle juice is a trick that a very popular fast food joint that specializes in chicken sandwiches uses, you just did not here it from me.

Yohboh did the cooking tonight since I am more wretchedly sick than he is.

Food for when you are sick

When I am sick, I want congee.

And Campbell's super salty chicken noodle condensed soup.

And overly sweet hot tea.

Someone who should blog

Jeffrey Steingarten should blog.

Rice salad

I normally make pasta salad but the toddler should not eat wheat every day so I improvised with this:

Rice salad
2 tomatoes chopped
1 zucchini chopped
1/2 purple onion chopped (why do they call this a red onion? Are they color blind?)
Olive oil
2 handfuls chopped parsley
2 cups white rice
Lime juice
Balsamic vinegar

It was pretty good.

I know I have blogged about this before, but every summer I make this. It is delicious and really good for you.

There is no set recipe but every time I make this I do include:
Acid (Lime juice, lemon juice, red wine vinegar- yeah I put all three in)

I whiz this in a blender. Some people use a food processor but I like a blender because I can put it in the dishwasher!

This version actually had chives in it because I bought some and it is not a long lasting herb. We had this tonight for dinner with hamburgers. Because eating something so healthy totally negates the delicious badness that is red meat.
